The Upturned Turtle
Having posted an idea for an improved computer mouse
(Idea: Turtle Mouse), which uses a backing shell to multiply the movement activity of the mouse in terms of area covered on the mouse mat. I had been thinking of a way to apply the principle to touch screen tablet computers.
Then it occurred to me that all that needed to be done was effectively flip the turtle function over.
So in the case of the tablet computer, the backing case is the shell part
(1), and the screen and internally attached computer hardware is equivalent to the actual mouse part, that can move side to side, and up and down over it's central mounting on the inside of the case
(2), so it “Gimbles” and against which the screen acts, giving a relative position between the two which the computer interprets as a command to move about the contents displayed on the screen.
To operate it, all that is required is to depress the edge of the screen slightly on the side in the direction you wish to move the page content.
In conjunction with the touch facility, this then frees up certain functions of touching the screen, and delegates that function to the rocking movement of the screen within the case... So scrolling through many pages for instance, is delegated to the rock or “nudge” motion, instead of having to keep stroking the screen up or down (and making your cat jealous).
A stretchy rubber seal border
(3) is placed between the case rim and the edge of the screen to keep the unit's integrity, and permit this movement, and only a small amount of this motion would be required to accomplish the task performed, as a depression on one side of just 1mm equals an elevation of the other side of the same, giving an overall differential of 2mm over the central mounting axis.
Now, when reading an e-book, for example, you just nudge the side to turn the page.
A
nd it could make it easier to scroll for instance, if the tablet is placed on a table in a meeting and you are standing, reaching down to it, and don't want to swipe the screen in the usual way in case you misplace you finger, and just flip the tablet itself of the table... but just push in the chosen side or give a little tap.
